A Fishermans tale

On Tuesday we were lucky to have Joe come and talk to us about fishing and the ocean.
The students had many great questions and learnt a lot about how we can look after the ocean and protect the fish.

Check out our photos and stories.

Joe has a boat that is called Leilani and it is 14 metres long.
His favourite fishing spot is the Mercury Islands in the Coromandel.
He has caught a marlin that was 180kgs and another that was 220kg.
Sometimes he charters his boat. His boat can have 7 people sleeping on it.
When you catch a kingfish it has to be 75cm long.

Joe has caught a marlin, it was very big, about the size of room 2s roof. It was a big blue marlin. Joe said that if you are fishing and don't follow the rules you can get fined and if you don't have enough money to pay they will sell your boat.
Joe has been in a shark cage that he can stand up in and he saw a huge great white shark that was 5 metres long.

Joe started fishing and snorkling when he was 7 years old and got his diving license when he was 14.  He has a world record for the biggest marlin and he is in the world record book. He has a specail tool that you use to measure scallops and crayfish and lots of shellfish. Sometimes you may find eggs under the crayfish tail so you have to put them back.

St Joseph's school, room 2 has just had an interview with Joe. He came from Whitianga in the coromandel. He has caught lots of different fish including marlin and snapper. He has a boat called Leilani which is 14 Metres long and about 7 metres wide. Joe has even seen a shark that was 5 metres long.

Joe brought in two luers that you drag behind the boat to catch marlin. Joe has also caught kingfish. One was about 1.9kg and another 2 kg and it was 1.3metres long. Joe showed us a belt that you put on for the big rod. He put it around his waist and then put the rod inside.
